Why Barbara Chose Delmanor Glen Abbey
After retiring, Barbara had been living in Victoria, B.C. When her sons decided it was time for her to move back to Ontario to be closer to them, she bought a condo in Oakville. It happened to be right beside Delmanor Glen Abbey.
Question: When you moved back to Ontario, where did you end up living?
Barbara: I bought a condo in Oakville, which ended up being right beside Delmanor Glen Abbey.
Question: What made you decide to move into Delmanor Glen Abbey?
Barbara: I was on the second floor of my condo and over the winter it was really hard to manage in all the ice and snow, going downstairs to let my dog outside. So I decided to speak with Delmanor to see if there was a suite available. The first time I visited, the place was very clean and inviting looking. There were fresh flowers around. It is a welcoming environment, so when you are here, you feel like it is home.
Question: Has it been a good decision?
Barbara: Yes. I am living in a one-bedroom suite with a patio. In the winter, it will be easy for me to clear the snow off and let my dog outside. It was a really great move and I’m really liking it.

What Daily Life Is Like at Delmanor Glen Abbey
Life at Delmanor Glen Abbey is built around choice. Residents set their own pace, whether that means a structured morning routine, a relaxed afternoon with family, or an evening out. For Barbara, two months in, the days are already full and active.
A typical day looks like this:
- Making her own coffee in her suite, collecting breakfast from downstairs, and settling in before starting the day
- Taking her dog for a walk along one of the nearby trails
- Attending a yoga class
- Letting her dog out to play in the wooded area behind the building
- Spending the afternoon with her son and his family, who live a five-minute walk away, or joining a Delmanor outing to Walmart, Sobeys, or a local attraction
- An evening walk with her dog after dinner
- Occasional movie nights or Monday musical performances
Favourite Activities and Programs
Question: What are your favourite activities or programs at Delmanor Glen Abbey?
Barbara: I haven’t been here long enough to get to a bunch of events yet. But I like going on trips where they walk around parks or the harbour. I am also looking forward to the trip to Fergus that is taking place in a few weeks and exploring the Friday summer markets at Oakville Place.
Delmanor Glen Abbey offers a wide range of fitness, social, cultural, and cognitive programs through its LivingWell program, including organized excursions, fitness classes, and regular entertainment. Barbara is only two months in and is still discovering what the calendar has to offer.
What the Staff and Care Are Like
Question: How would you describe the staff?
Barbara: The staff are exceptional. They know everybody’s name. As soon as somebody new comes in, they know their name. When I first came in, I would be walking down the hallway somewhere, and someone would call out to me by name and say hello. And they are always there. It doesn’t matter what you ask for. They are always there to be helpful.
Question: How do you feel about the level of care provided?
Barbara: There are a lot of things that you can get done right here. Bronte physio comes into the building, a doctor comes in every Thursday, and there is a hearing clinic. There is a nurse here all the time, and 24-hour medical staff on hand if anything happens.
